Description
Adiponectin is a cytokine (adipocytokine) identified by the group of Matsuzawa et al., Department of Internal Medicine and Molecular Science, Osaka University, in 1996 as a genetic apM1 (adipose most abundant gene transcript) expressed specifically in adipose tissues, and is a secretory protein consisting of 244 amino acids. It has been reported that it forms multimers in blood and has a structure homologous to type VIII and X collagens and also has a spherical structure homologous to complement component C1q1, 2). Adiponectin has recently been reported to exhibit various physiological activities; in particular, its inhibition of smooth muscle cell proliferation and of adhesion of monocyte to endothelial cells is expected to inhibit arteriosclerosis3, 4, 5). Moreover, it was found in a study in mice that administration of adiponectin improved diabetes mellitus6). It is known that a few ug of adiponectin are present per 1 mL of serum in human blood, and relationships between decrease in serum level of it and obesity7), diabetes mellitus8, 9), and arteriosclerosis4, 8) have been reported. Adiponectin in blood is fractionated to low molecular weight form, middle molecular weight form, and high molecular weight form. Importance of monitoring of high molecular weight form is indicated from report that adiponectin concentration in blood is mainly depend on high molecular weight form.
